Students ages 6-18 are eligible to attend.
We can accommodate students with mobility devices up to and including wheelchairs.
We can accommodate up to 20 campers per one-week session.
The MSCO summer camp is held from 8am-12pm Monday through Friday for the week (session) held.
The camp is located at Mary Scott Park in Richmond, Indiana. The facilities include a cabin with bathroom and kitchen facilities . The cabin is accessible through an ADA ramp.
The staff is comprised of special education teachers, qualified pararofessionals, and support staff.
The average ratio of staff-to-campers is 1:2.
A licensed nurse is available through camper hours.
Our staff are trained in CPR and utilize effective behavior management techniques. We are a collaborative student-centered group of professionals.
The staff is proficient in the use of adaptive communication devices.
The camp and grounds are ADA accessible. The orchard grounds may be navigated with the use of various mobility devices.
In addition to medical personnel present, the MSCO works with local responders in the event of an emergency.
The parents and guardians of campers are expected to provide all necessary documentation and medications. In the event of a seizure, our medical personnel work with camp staff to safeguard the well-being of each camper.
Mary Scott Community Orchard operates through partnerships with local organizations and volunteers to implement sustainable development projects.
The staff is trained in behavior management and de-escalation. Through these strategies, alongside the presence of the staff and othe campers, we are able to help students enjoy the utmost camping experience.
In addition to engaging with the orchard itself, we will have scavenger hunts, science education, art-based activities, using technology, and much more!
In working and planning with our supervisors and staff, we intentionally plan activities that include our summer camp participants. This includes evaluating and planning activities that accommodate students with different needs.
The activities planned for summer camp necessarily involve inclusion and social interaction. Staff work to support our campers are supported and welcomed in this space.
We will have two buses for scheduled off-site travel through the week. This will include travel to other orchards and points of interest in the community. Staff will accompany the student groups on each trip.
Our goal is to provide ample opportunties for creative expression through the student contributions to the orchard. This will include artistic expression, sensory play, and therapeutic recreation.
Summer camp hours are from 8am-12pm each day the camp is in session. The first summer camp session will be held from June 15-19. The second is held from June 22-26.
Unless transportation is provided, parents and/or guardians are responsible for bringing their camper to Mary Scott Park each day and picking them up at the end of the day's activities.
The progress of students each day will be posted to the Facebook page of the Mary Scott Community Orchard.
Each camper may bring a backpack or other carrier with them each day of camp. It is good to have a change of clothing, just in case. The camp will provide water and snacks through the morning. All anticipated equipment will be listed in the 'list of things to bring.'
Parents and/or guardians interested in registration may download the necessary forms through our website by clicking on the 'Registration' link. These forms may be submitted and an evaluation and interview will be done to ensure that we can meet the needs of each camper.
